​Poem: The Smile

Today I felt a little sad
While walking down the street
Until I caught a lovely smile
From a friend I chanced to meet.

It made me feel much better
And I thought I’d pass it on
So I gave it to a lady
Who appeared a bit forlorn.

The lady was a stranger
But she took it gratefully
She wore it for a little while
Then gave it back to me.

And when I had it back again
I kept my smile in place
And passed it on to everyone
Who wore a solemn face.

And as I wandered home again
I really felt quite glad
That just by smiling now and then
I was no longer sad.
